Music To Live By: Guided By Voices

31 Mar

These past couple of weeks, the weather has finally been giving way, inch by inch, to spring here in Mitten State. The last few days I have been filled to the brim with girlish glee at the prospect of driving with *GASP* my windows down!! And when I do dare to let the sunshine in and let a cool (more like cold) breeze drift into my car as I coast down the street (more like loosing my tires in giant gaping potholes) I like to listen to the serenely stimulating sounds of Guided By Voices.

Nothing says “good feeling” like the static rhythms of GBV. Maybe its the changing seasons that remind me of why this band is so great. Rightfully so, since they’ve changed members more than a few times (oh Robert Pollard). Inspired by cult influences of British underground, punk, progressive rock, and all things great, it’s no wonder they’ve released album after album since their start in 1983. My favorite will always be 1994’s Bee Thousand

Simply because, well, I am a big fan of the pig pen. I highly recommend giving them a listen while laying in bed, or the floor. Driving in the car is my personal favorite. Or you can be one of those people and listen to it during your early morning jog (even though I hate those people). So long as the sun is shining and the breeze is a-breezing, you really can’t go wrong. Here are some of my personal favorites to croon to when I’ve got GBV going:

5 Songs To Give You Spring Fever

4 Mar

I don’t know what I’m more bored with – this non-stop nasty weather or the fact that there is NO ESCAPING IT!!! It’s all over the news and our news feeds; pot holes so big they’re more like a portal to Hell itself, snow storms leaving people stranded in their own homes, and salt stains that have ruined all of my cute winter boots! Enough is enough – here’s a radical way to beat the never-ending winter blues. I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 songs to give you spring fever (in my humble opinion). Just grab a nice iced coffee, put on your sunnies and sandals, and smile as you listen to it on repeat and pray for Mr.Sunshine to do his work already.

5. Black – Pearl Jam

Intimate lyrics and, and hauntingly beautiful instrumentals makes Pearl Jam’s “Black” the perfect song to listen to during warm spring showers.

4. Heavy Bells – J. Roddy Walston & The Business

I have no idea what the lyrics mean. Seriously though, if it makes sense to you, let me in on it because I just don’t get it. All I do know is that this song is fun, electric, and just makes me want to run barefoot in the sunshine. Isn’t that what spring is all about?

3. Sweet Jane – The Velvet Underground

Though Lou Reed certainly had his moments, I can’t help but find this song charming and surprisingly light (we are talking about the Velvet Underground for goodness sake.) Although the Cowboy Junkies cover is probably the best cover of any song…ever, the original still tugs at my heartstrings in a way no other song can.

2. Mean Streets – Tennis

Melodic and just plain cool. It reminds me of the first warm day when you can drive around town with your windows down and the sun on your face.

1. Dancing With Myself – Billy Idol

Nothing is more liberating than finally shedding your coat and swapping it out for a light jacket after a bout of winter blues. And I don’t think anything epitomizes liberation anymore than Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself.” Also, I don’t care what anyone says, this is music video is the shit.
